Proprietary model

Canva has developed its own proprietary foundation model called the Canva Design Model, specifically for design tasks. They also acquired Leonardo.ai in 2024, whose technology is used for generating editable design elements. While Canva aims to use its in-house models wherever possible, they also utilize third-party models (like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) in the early stages of new AI features to learn and iterate quickly, before investing in proprietary solutions for scalability and cost-effectiveness. Canva has also embedded its platform within other AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Google Gemini.

Moat and openness

Moat 7 out of 10

Moat

  • Proprietary Model
  • Proprietary Data
  • Network Effects
  • Switching Costmoderate
  • Unique UX
  • Distributionstrong

Canva possesses a strong moat, primarily driven by its massive user base (265M+), extensive distribution channels, and a highly accessible, unique UX that simplifies complex design tasks. The development of its proprietary Canva Design Model, trained on user data and design sequences, coupled with the acquisition of Leonardo.ai, further strengthens its defensibility by creating a specialized AI tailored to its platform and user needs, making it difficult for competitors to replicate the full integrated experience.

6/ 10
Openness 6 out of 10

Openness

  • Open model weights
  • Published research
  • Open source contributions
  • Transparency reports
  • Public safety evals

Canva demonstrates moderate openness through its comprehensive Trust & Security Portal, which details its security posture, privacy practices, and compliance commitments (including SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, and GDPR). They publish regular Transparency Reports regarding government requests for user data and have clear privacy policies that emphasize user control over their data and AI-powered feature usage. While they are transparent about data handling and security, there is no indication of open-sourced model weights, published research, or public safety evaluations of their AI models.

Timeline

high tierlow risk

Canva holds a significant market share in the graphics software industry, sitting third behind Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, and is positioned as a more accessible alternative to complex professional design tools.

Value and ROI

What it should move: Marketers spend less time producing campaign assets and adapting them to different formats.

Best fit

It fits distributed teams that often produce social, presentation, and campaign assets.

The catch

Templates make assets easy to multiply. High-visibility work still needs brand, rights, and design review.
